Stringed Instruments Sound Evaluation 2026 is now open for submission

To further advance global exchange and mutual enrichment in violin making and performance art, and to foster the preservation and innovative development of violin culture, the Organizing Committee of Music China 2026 will present a series of stringed instruments-themed cultural activities at the Hall W1, Shanghai New International Expo Centre.

As one of the flagship events of this program, the Stringed Instruments Sound Evaluation (hereinafter referred to as “the Evaluation”) is now officially open for public submission of instruments.

The inaugural Stringed Instruments Sound Evaluation is jointly organized and co-hosted by the Violin Makers' Division of the China Musical Instrument Association, the Organizing Committee of Music China, and the Violin Making Center at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. The leadership and organizational structures are now in place, with master violin makers guiding the committee. Renowned violinists and professors from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music will serve as judges, alongside several seasoned string instrument enthusiasts acting as public judges to ensure the event's authority and fairness.

The Evaluation emphasizes academic exchange and artistic appreciation. Participants can submit contemporary violins, violas, and cellos for evaluation based primarily on sound quality, while also considering craftsmanship. Submissions are open not only to new instruments but also to European violins. Registration is now open, inviting enthusiasts from across the country to participate actively.

Scheduled activities include:

  • October 27: Submission and registration at the venue.
  • October 28: Violin evaluations.
  • October 29: Viola and cello evaluations, followed by an awards ceremony.

The Evaluation process consists of preliminary and final rounds focusing on sound quality and craftsmanship. Awards categories include Best Sound Award, Outstanding Tone, Outstanding Volume, Outstanding Playability, and Participant Excellence Awards. Winners will be announced both on-site and online.

Prizes include certificates signed by sound and expert judges, commemorative plaques, and gifts. The awards ceremony will feature notable leaders and distinguished professors presenting the awards.

Sound quality is the primary measure of a musical instrument's excellence, and offline blind listening assessments provide the most direct and reliable method for evaluating violin sounds. Music China aims to continue hosting these evaluations annually, enhancing the sound recognition and discernment abilities of both domestic and international luthiers and performers. This initiative seeks to elevate China's status from a major producer to a leading force in stringed instruments making, paving the way for future advancements.
